Nov 21,2006__RFID tagging on an item-level for pharmaceuticals is 100 per cent reliable, according to packager Owens-Illinois (O-I) and RFID company Impinj.
The two companies demonstrated the reliability in a live demonstration and stated that the cutting-edge embedded tag method was the key to helping them achieve the breakthrough.
Two demonstrations were conducted at the RFID Health Care Industry Adoption Summit in Washington, using a near-field ultrahigh frequency (UHF) Gen 2 RFID solution consisting of readers and chips from Impinj and item-level embedded RFID tags from I-O.
Michael Liard, research director, RFID and contactless at ABI Research, said: "These results are a true breakthrough in item-level RFID implementation
"The demonstrations validate that a near-field UHF RFID solution exists and that it provides remarkable performance and reliability."
O-I has developed a method of putting RFID inlays into pharmaceutical packaging in the base of the bottle.
This process is done during the moulding of the bottle.
